Masters Of Mayhem!Logan Hicks: God Of Intricacy & Detail

Logan Hicks

When I first started out cutting stencils about three years ago, it was because of a certain artist called Banksy. He had driven me into the depths of stencil art and to a certain extent, fashion designing. And so, because of interest and obsession, I dived head first into the www seeking alternate artist of the “lowbrow” art scene, looking for that extra edge in design, hoping to find something different, something downright eye-catching. I found this:

Hong Kong Alley

L.H. with his stencil design: Hong Kong Alley

I just could not believe it: look at the detail on the road, the details on the buildings, and even the sky had a orange| red gradient detail! I was above myself. I could not think straight. I did what I had to do, I googled like I have never googled before, searching for information on this Logan Hicks character. Apparently, he started out working in a screen printing shop after graduating from art school. He worked for some time before starting out his own screen printing business, Workhorse Visuals where after a time he got bored doing tees for corporations that he switched to doing posters for bands gigs and clubs. He soon moved to California, and because he had left his screen printing equiptment behind, he started doing stencils, a decision that would soon fetch him underground fame and fortune.

Because of the intricacy and delicacy of his stencil cuttings, and the sheer beauty of his end results, Logan started to get attention wide and far. The likes of Nike and K-Swiss came calling, and soon enough he had his own gallery to run. Some people would probably stop right there, but because of his nature and willingness to share, Logan now curates and represents other up and coming artists. He also goes on tour around the world with some other artists. But life was always never that easy for him. The first 6 years out of school, he had lived in relative poverty, sleeping on the floor next to his screens. However, he had a goal and he stuck to it, and that made the difference. I guess being real anal about things does bring rewards! Whatever it is, if you were a newcomer to the stencil art scene, then here’s a bunch of visuals to welcome and introduce you to this underground world, which Logan Hicks holds a big portion of.

The “Hong Kong Alley” artwork is probably equivalent to a 4 or 5 layer stencil. I think he probably took around a month to cut the entire thing. A long process, but for each design he fetches a huge amount of $, which is really fair towards him, because his work is amazingly hard to do. Imagine cutting 2/3rds of it and then making a mistake!

  3. Watch the video, it’s at the bottom of this post. Amazing!

plus above all the talent and professionalism. logan is a friggin fabulous guy.

  5. Yep, that’s the feedback I get from people who have met and worked with him before. He seems like a pretty down to earth type of fellow, just like most of the more famous street artists around. Ultimately, I would like to contact him for an interview, if I can pick some time out of his [demanding] schedule. XX fingers here! ;)

  6. Beautiful work… Logan is a stencil god! :)

He is a “down to earth type of fellow” because he is my first cousin! That is the Blankenship in him (his mom’s maiden name).

  8. Hi Logan, I was sending something out to see if it could be cut by one of the places that do basic things for me sometimes. I can accross and read about you, and I am fairely sure that anyone I sent the design to, to take a look at, will not be able to create a stencil that will give the look of the true design. I can see what it needs, but I am not skilled, and only do a little bit myself. If you could please take a look, and tell me what you think, and what it would cost to have you cut it, I would so much appreciate it.

This wont let me paste the design here, but if you would please get back to me with your E-mail address, I’ll send it to you right away.

It is for a very young band, and this is their logo. I do special effect airbrush make-up, and they want the design put onto their guests at a celebration. Let me know what you think.

    Thanks so much,

The stencil seen in the pictures was machine cut, all he did to create this was to take a photo, vectorize it and send it off to the company that cuts his stuff. It’s really not impressive and just shows how easy it is when you have money to become a “God of intricacy and detail”. It’s just sad really.
