Drawing has played a really important part in my life. As a kid, I vividly remember using my leftover food to make castles and draw weird creatures on my plate. I then outgrew my plate and moved on to bigger things: my house walls, to my parents dismay. After many canings and sore asses, during my teenage years, I used to draw in all of my borrowed and passed down school books, leaving a legacy of doodles and scribbling in it. I also used to draw comics that my younger sister would read and subsequently embarrass me by showing the drawings to my family, girlfriends and yes, total strangers. And now, at the tender age of 29, I still find myself drawing on my doors, walls and unimaginable places, mostly to pass time. I never could take drawing or doodling seriously because quite frankly people don’t take my drawings and doodles seriously, and I can’t blame them because I’m quite hopeless at it! But alas, I take pride in introducing someone who makes a living out of it: Jon Burgerman.

Assorted Stickers by Jon Burgerman

Spraycap toy by John Burgerman
Jon is a 28 year old dude from Nottingham, UK and like most British folks is really into tea. In fact, if you read most of his interviews, he’s probably mentioned tea a few times at least! But other than being a tea addict, he is also a very profound artist, but the proper term to use would be doodler. It must be really cool being him, especially when some stranger asks him THE question: What do you do for a living? I’m a professional Doodler. How cool is that?
A mural in Derby, which he later let’s kids color in!
Miss Sixty Showroom by Jon Burgerman

Jon Burgerman is one of England’s most revered cartoonists. His distinctive style has been seen in pride of place at exhibitions from as far wide as LA, to Shanghai and Melbourne, and he’s designed everything from tees, toys, books, stickers and sneakers to bags, sick bags and video games. Yes, even napkins, cardboards off the street and toilet rolls! He’s also been invited to doodle in places such as hotel rooms, clothing stores and of course numerous exhibitions all over. He’s been featured in many websites and articles, and has also appeared in some genre driven books such as Pictoplasma, Los Logos 3, The Art of Rebellion 2 and Dot Dot Dash.

yep, that’s a Bart Simpson toy, doodled by JB
Jon studied art in school and the moment he picked up the pencil he never really dropped it. He hated art class as he always felt restricted to doing what his instructors wanted and also because they spent half the time talking, but when he got home it was an altogether different story. He loved art itself, and would often practice in his sketchbooks [wonder how much that is worth today?] He started out doing stickers in college to pass time, pasting his drawings all over campus and beyond, from bus stops to vending machines, and his distinctive style soon caught the eye and attention of many far and beyond.
He leaves me speechless…
I’d like to think that he is a pretty cool fella altogether, and reading his interviews and viewing his site leads me to believe that he is a hilarious personality, but a highly average dude with a not so average job, so to speak. He’s like a guy that’s constantly on happy pills, either that or he’s had one too many cakes and tea, sugar high, I think that’s what they call it.
For me, personally, I feel that his work pretty much describes how he feels at the present moment that he is doing his art. If he is feeling all happy and cuddly on the day, then most likely his designs turn out looking all cutesy and cuddly, stuff that you’d find on an episode of the Powerpuff Girls. I also think that his drawings are an outlet for his emotions, his influences being everything, from the music he listens to, the experiences he’s had, other artists drawings, movies he’s watched and so forth. More often than not, it’s all rather too random to pinpoint it, and in THAT I find the sheer genius of his work. I believe that if he was given the chance to paint the entire Great Wall of China, he could do it without stopping once to think of what he is going to do next. His mind seems to be an endless pit of ideas, a churning machinery of doodlery [new word for my dictionary!] brilliance and a whole universe of perverse colorful creatures with funny hair, oddly placed limbs and weird expressions. Again, all in all, it’s hard to describe his work as a collective because each creation is so distinct it’ll want the attention all on its own.
Yes, a whole hotel room.
If you’re wondering right about now, wait a minute, this guy’s not a street artist, why is he being reviewed here, well it’s safe to say that he IS in fact a street artist, as he did paste stickers all over the place sometime back. Not too sure whether he is still at it, but as you know, old habits die hard and I’m pretty sure he’s still hitting the streets. That and the fact that I am a bit biased: I just love his artwork and decided to share it with the world. So sue me.
He sells everything from posters, t-shirts, paintings, drawings, canvases and stickers online and has a pretty hefty list of fans and admirers alike.

He’s kind of a celebrity in the World of Doodles and Street Art, but you won’t smell an ounce of arrogance on him. He’s as down to earth as they come and yes, mighty talented too!
The beauty of his B&W doodles is that after he’s done, there is every possibility that you’d be able to paint it in!

I want to say how inspiring yor work is, to all people, especially people my age, as we sit in art doing your work, i hear some of my class mates shout out things like ‘when i get home, im doodling on my wall’ it gives the sense that they can express themselves freely, even if their parents yell at them, haha. But i love your work, and i think you should stick to it
