Masters Of Mayhem!Interview: Logan Hicks

Three year’s have passed from when I had first discovered this guy’s artwork, and I’ve got to say that there’s been nothing but improvement since then. Nike, Kswiss, La Sportiela, MTV… these are some of the names that have either used his services or just simply adore his work.

Like the ten’s of thousands other street artist and designers out there, I too have had to look up to this man’s designs and productions. Give a man a fan base, some adoration, status and recognition and it could all go up to his head. Not so Monsieur Hicks, who remains as down to earth and rooted as ever. I think his decision to name his company Workhorse Visuals is as accurate as accuracy can get: because there’s just not many people who works as hard as Logan does. Take a look at what he has to say about his work, fatherhood, the TV and of course, street art.

THE SERIOUS BIT:

FM: Hi Logan, thank you for the opportunity for me to do this interview. I am aesthetic and overjoyed! O.k., here we go. Tell us a bit about your origin please.
LH:
Born in Key West, Florida, but from Baltimore Maryland. I am a well traveled stencil artist leading a low tech high life.

FM: You seem to move about a lot… whereabouts are you at this current moment, and what are you doing there?
LH:
I am nesting in Brooklyn, NY right now. I am expecting my first child in one week, so I am going to be settled into NY for the rest of the year enjoying being a father.

FM: Congratulations on having a child in the coming week or so! This must be exciting times for you and your girlfriend. Lot’s of things to think about and prepare! Now I’m really honored that you can take some time off to answer my probes!

How did you first get involved in the street art scene?
LH:
Not so sure I am really involved in the street scene to be honest. I just have a number of friends that are urban artists, and sort of be default I am kinda lumped into that genre of art. I took notice of it when I moved to Baltimore, and things sort of orbited around the artists involved since.

FM: Well, we [the fans] kind of dumped you in that genre. Anyway, you do take part in a lot of exhibitions that a lot of other street artists get involved in as well. We realize and appreciate that cutting a stencil takes zen like patience and precision skills, and not everyone can do it like you can. I don’t call you the “God of Intricacy & Detail” for nothing! ;) When did you realize that you could make a career out of stencilling?
LH:
I never had a pivotal moment where I realized it. I have always had my hands in many things, and managed to piece together a living off of many things. Throughout the years I just started doing more stencils and less of the other things. Now days I do mostly stencils and make a good living off of it.

FM: You’ve done a lot of collaborations, which by far [artistically] do you find most pleasing, or which was the best experience?
LH:
Each experience is rewarding in different ways. For me, anytime I have a chance to meet and work with a talented, focused, intelligent person, it is rewarding.

FM: You’ve produced some of the greatest stencils and I believe there’s more to come … which is your personal favourite and why?
LH:
My personal favorite is the last one I created, because each one is an evolution of the years of pursuing the ‘perfect piece’.

Logan with one of his latest creations.

FM: Which city has most of your stencils?
LH:
London right now, because the art market over there is very strong and many sales have been coming from there.

FM: The Everfresh Crew [Melbourne] is with you right now. Are you guys planning to hit some empty walls with some fresh paint, or are you guys taking part in any exhibitions?
LH:
Na, nothing like that. The Everfresh guys are just good friends of mine, so I have been enjoying catching up with them and offering a place to stay. I am also the US Distributor for Sabotaz Spraypaint, so they have been catching up to stock up on some paint for walls they are doing around the city.

FM: Do you still screen print? [If yes, where can I get your stuff?]
LH:
Nope. I put in too many years screen printing, so when the time came to get out of the biz, I gladly stepped aside and let those that are more talented step forward to take my place.

FM: When are you gonna update your site? It’s been some time now… ;)
LH:
Actually I updated the workhorsevisuals.com site about 2 weeks ago and added some new works, updated the blog, and added new sections. I update my LoganHicks.com site when I find the time, which has been in short supply lately.

FM: What’s next in line for you? Working on any new projects?
LH:
Too many to things to mention. Hopefully a show in Antewerp next January. A huge solo show in London next June. More travelling, meeting up with friends, maybe even a show in Taipei and Melbourne next year. Still too early to tell.

THE POTSHOTS SECTION:

FM: Ever met Banksy before?
LH:
Yeah, briefly at a friends house in LA years ago. Didn’t know it was Banksy til afterwards. Shook hands, had a beer, and went about my day.

FM: Ever been in a fight? Did you win or lose?
LH:
Yes, and both.

Intricately delicate layered stencil of passengers in the train.

FM: Have you been to this part of Asia? [Malaysia]
LH:
No. haven’t made it to Malaysia, but would love to go. Maybe in time.

FM: How much time do you spend on the telly?
LH:
Not too much. More of a music man myself, so I always have something playing in the background when I am working, and I am usually always working.

Collaboration with K-Swiss, Evil Monito and Logan. Box is hand cut and exclusive.

FM: Have you ever been arrested? Tell us about it.
LH:
Yeah, years ago when I was a teenager. Nothing exciting to tell though. Just a young kid being stupid and getting what I had coming to me.

FM: What’s your most horrible experience?
LH:
My dog of 8 years dying.

FM: Any Last Words?
LH:
Nope. Just stay tuned to find out whats next!

First and foremost, congrats to Logan for his new born baby…
This article is great, i heard so much about Logan Hicks, finally get the chance to read about his story here.

My favorite piece of his artwork is his stencils on the people. It is so detail, it almost look like photography picture.

    Great job F’kin Mayhem!

  2. Yeah, he is a very cool and super duper talented individual. The best part is he is also very down to earth and grounded.

Yep, they don’t call him the God of Intricacy & Detail for nothing… :) Most of his work is excellent, but I personally like that particular piece a lot as well… I’m also loving the Sunset Apartments, which is one of his newer works.

    :)

    awesome interview, very inspiring!!

  4. Yes it was, Gav, and at that particular time, Logan was expecting a child and was just settling down in NY, so for him to take time out was really special to me and it also taught me an important lesson: there is always time for everything.
    :)
